Mason Off Road Sets Its Sights on Baja Glory at the 2025 NORRA 1000

Updated: 4 days ago

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" - Chinese Proverb. This point rings true for Dave Mason Jr. and his team of passionate racers as they will embark on their journey from Ensenada to San Jose del Cabo over the next week. This year's edition of the NORRA Mexican 1000 race begins on Saturday April 26th and will consist of 6 consecutive days of racing action as the team works their way down the peninsula. In this case the racers will far surpass the 1,000 mile mark, as the total distance is 1,418 grueling Baja miles. The team will fight hard to defend their win at last year's event!

"This race is about endurance, strategy, toughness, and survival over the long road to Cabo" said Dave Mason Jr. "Naturally, we want to come out at the start and put ourselves in contention to win stages, but one thing we have to keep in mind is that it's a very long race and we have to be smart and avoid mistakes, especially early on".

The NORRA style of racing is different from other forms of desert racing. Typically, a desert race is nonstop from point to point, and the clock doesn't stop until you cross the finish line. The NORRA events are more like a rally-type of format in which the competitors race in full-speed, timed sections (called "Special Stages") and then have transit or "Liaison Stages" in between where crews can work on the car, refuel, and change tires without costing time against the clock. Once the drivers complete all of the stages for a given day, then they have the entire night to make repairs and prepare for the next day's racing. This makes for very competitive racing during the Special Stages.

Mason Off Road is blessed to have such a dedicated group of crew members who make it all happen. One key crew member, Evan Erdelyi, is responsible for the preparation of our race vehicles. He turns 21 this week! Though he may be young, he brings a huge amount of knowledge to our program. "Prepping an off-road racecar is never an easy task. My team and I have been putting in the time in day after day to ensure we deliver a car that is 110%, and we will not stop until we see the checkered flag." said Mr. Erdelyi.
